I've been posting at Dreamwidth lately rather than here in IJ. My journal at DW is http://okaasan59.dreamwidth.org/

It is not f-locked so anyone here can look me up there.

I'm probably going to keep this journal on IJ but just post on DW and LJ for now. Is there anyone here that is not on either DW or LJ that would be left out if I did so?

Happy Cinco de Mayo! [05 May 2009|09:10am]
And we all know the importance of that, don't we? Yes, it's margarita specials night! We might go out and eat Mexican tonight if we can get there before the crowds.

I am at Dreamwidth now under okaasan59. I haven't copied or cross-posted anything yet and have no plans to leave LJ. If you want to "have access" to me there, feel free. (They don't call it "friends" there, it's "having access" which sounds kinky to me!)

Just a couple more days until LouisiANIME! I'm getting excited. ^_^ It's at a hotel in Baton Rouge which is only about 10-15 minutes from my house. The scheduling is still confusing to me, considering that I have to figure the con schedule and mesh with the kids since they both have school or work, but we'll figure it out. And [info]fullmetalrose is gonna stay here and hang with us and it will be FUN! It's an inaugural con so you never know what to expect. It started out very disorganized but things have been coming together the past couple of weeks so I have hope. We're even helping with the yaoi panel. ^_^ [info]fullmetalrose got lots of naughty stuff to give away. Heehee! And Shannon drew an amazing nekkid bishie that I'm getting blown up to life size at Kinko's. (I think they'll do it because she left the boy bits off--they're on a separate file that we can copy and laminate ourselves.) That's so we can play a game of Pin The Cock on The Bishie. I really owe Shannon for spending 2+ hours after work yesterday working on this after I volunteered her for it. (And what that girl can get done in 2 hours would take me days to do. Or make that never because I can't draw shit compared to her.)

In other news, Sean has a bad cold or sinus infection that I hope I don't get. It's not the flu because he doesn't have any aches or fever. *washes hands repeatedly*

In other news, the work on the rock garden slowly advances. I should be out there now, since I'm working at the high school tomorrow but I'm being lazy.

I haven't seen our baby armadillo lately. Maybe he ate all the bugs he could find in our yard. We did find a 5' king snake in the front yard. Jeff caught him and put him by the back fence where (hopefully) he'll be less likely to encounter skittish neighbors.

We went to a crawfish boil at a friend's house last night. It was our first crawfish of the season and it was wonderful. I got a gallon of strawberry margarita daiquiris to go with the crawfish. It was my first time at that Louisiana staple--the drive-through daiquiri shop. And it was good!

I have registered myself (but not the kids yet) for MechaCon in late July. I also made our room reservation since last year I waited too late. But I tried to preregister for LouisiANIME and the site said the pre-reg was closed on April 25. On the front page it just says register before May (which I figure would give you through April 30.) We'll just register at the door I guess. It will only cost $5 more for the weekend but it's still a pain. I've never registered at the door for a con before and since this is an inaugural event it will probably be a lengthy and convoluted process. *sigh* But Scott McNeil will be there!

I am a mad closet-cleaning demon! Seriously, I've accidentally cleaned out three closets in the past few days. (I start looking for one thing and get carried away.) And afterwards there's always shit left over so the closet is clean but the rest of the house looks like crap!

We have a pet baby armadillo. It lives under our sago palm and comes out in the yard and digs for bugs with it's snout and ignores us. I took some pictures that I may post when I feel less lazy.

I've had "Montezuma's Revenge" since last night. I think it may be from the hot wings I had for supper. We're supposed to go up to Mississippi tomorrow to help Jeff's family clean some property up there and visit with relatives. But my current affliction does not go well with a camper bathroom. *pops pepto tablets*

So last night I had a dream that I ran a company that made one-of-a-kind dolls. These were all unusual dolls that portrayed emo kids, vampires, nerds, gay kids and things like that. (I remember the gay doll even held a little rainbow flag!) The name of the company was DOLLternative. Ha! Usually things that I dream about seem really great in my dreams and really lame when I wake up. But I still think that name is kind of cool. ^_^ I did some net surfing and found some dolls sort of like the ones in my dream, but mine were a bit more quirky than pretty.

I just got back from my third dentist visit in a week. The first was an initial visit since we recently changed to a new dentist because our old one stopped taking our insurance. Then I went yesterday for my cleaning and today I had a filling replaced and two new ones. This dentist office is crazy fancy and computery. Not only do they take xrays but they also take digital pictures of each tooth that they can manipulate on computer. Two of the fillings I had done were porcelain which they make right in the office. They design them on the computer, the machine makes them and then they pop them in. Of course, it's the "popping in" part that I would like to do without but, eh, dentistry seems to be one of those professions that is an evil necessity. I have some other work that needs to be done but I'm going to wait a few months until this is paid for. I'd like to have my teeth in good enough shape that I may not have to get anything else done for many years.

And now I'm hungry but my jaw aches. Iz can be tepid soup tiem?

It's past my bedtime. And I just ate two leftover Taco Bell tacos straight out the fridge--cold. I am naaaaasty!

But on the good side, today I went to church and helped the youth stuff candy in plastic eggs for tomorrow's egg hunt, put up Easter banners and tables for tomorrow's breakfast, went to lunch with my parents and came home and did laundry, cleaned out Shannon's car and made butterfly shaped cookies. I also made an Easter diorama with Peeps bunnies and a church made out of a gingerbread house kit. The Peeps are having an Easter egg hunt. ^_^ I will post pictures later.

In the morning I will make my traditional hash brown casserole for the Easter breakfast.

Got up at 5:30 and woke Sean. Made his breakfast and lunch. We wait for the bus which doesn't come. So I drive him to school. I notice that traffic is unusually light. We get to the school and no one, beyond a few support staff, seems to be there. WTF? We come back home and check the internet to find out that at 5:30 this morning they decided to cancel all public schools. Apparently the bad storms last night did some damage in other parts of the parish, though our part seems to be fine. Maybe I should start turning the t.v. on again on school mornings. Lack of communication sucks.

Also, this might be the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I was at Wal-mart today when a young mom dropped her 6-month old baby on his head. (Or he fell out the cart, I'm not sure.) I didn't see it happen, I was one aisle over. They were in the produce section and the baby fell on a rubber mat in front of the lettuce. Several employees were helping her. The mom just looked kind of in shock. The baby was crying and had a red mark on the back of his head. I heard the employees talking about taking the baby to the hospital but a few minutes later I saw the mom, baby and Wal-mart employee checking out her groceries, then the employee walked her out the store. I hope she took the baby to the doctor or hospital.

Then as I was checking out I saw a tabloid headline that said, "Obama Cancels June! Says 11-month Year Will Save Americans Billions!" WTF? Who would buy this crap except as something to laugh at?

Last night I finished watching the series Avatar, The Last Airbender, and I really enjoyed it. Now I'm wondering if there is any good fanfiction for that series. I've tried googling but get sites that limit the fiction to PG-13 stories. (Not that I have to read anything more mature, but I don't want to limit my selection.) I'm not sure what pairings I'd prefer, maybe Zuko/Katara or Zuko/Sokka.

Any more Avatar fans here? Anyone got any recs?

p.s. I sooo want an Appa of my own. Huge, cuddly, white flying bison--what's not to love? My cat is huge and white and I've started calling her Appa and sometimes saying "yip, yip!" to her. Yes, I am incurably nerdy.

Real life has done its best to keep me busy lately. And not with anything important--no, it's more like weeding and laundry and other people's laundry, etc. That's why I've been scarce.

Oh, and speaking of weeding and gardening...I know a lot of you will be heading out to give your flowerbeds some TLC soon and I want to ask you to please not use cypress mulch. Here's an explanation of why you shouldn't, taken from the New Orleans Times Picayune:

"As gardeners turn to mulching to fend off heat and weeds in their summer beds, it's a good time to take a look at the ongoing controversy over cypress mulch.

Once favored as the platinum level of mulches, its use now is being discouraged through massive public information campaigns by organizations across the Gulf Coast, including the
Waterkeeper Alliance, Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, Atchafalaya Riverkeeper and the Save Our Cypress Coalition. Because cypress is grown primarily in wetlands areas, opponents of cypress mulch say, cutting the trees contributes to habitat destruction and the erosion of wetlands, an important line of defense againt hurricanes.

Moreover, they continue, green-minded individuals won't be losing anything by boycotting cypress mulch: It doesn't work as effectively as gardeners once believed.

'People think that cypress mulch is more rot-resistant and insect-resistant, but scientists at the University of Florida have shown that there are equally effective sustainable alternatives that don't deplete our natural wetlands and don't deprive our gardens of the benefits of mulching,' said Dan Favre, campaign manager of the nonprofit Gulf Restoration Network."

I feel like crap.

I haven't had much to do the past several days--a couple of errands, couple of loads of laundry and minor stuff around the house. So I've been dicking around on the computer, sleeping in, eating things I shouldn't, reading books and generally being a useless lump. Today I awoke with a headache and have had it all day, despite occasional doses of tylenol and advil. My innards are being whiny and I generally feel like crap. It might be hormonal but it might also be my body rebelling against my lazy slug nature.

Why is it that when I'm super busy I long to have nothing to do, but when I don't have anything pressing to do I end up squandering my time and feeling worse? And why am I such a whiny bitch?

Today was my sister's birthday. Mom took both of us to brunch at IHOP. Then we went to Michaels and gawked at how much it would cost Mom to frame a poster she got for Christmas. After that I treated when we went to The Enchanted Mansion, a doll museum. My sister's hobby is collecting dolls so she was thrilled to go. Dolls aren't exactly my favorite thing but it was interesting.

Shannon is working until midnight, Sean is camping with the scouts so it's just me and the cat on couch tonight. *yawn*
